Stability AI released an open model. It is slow and not as updated but does unlimited (as far as we can tell) and does not require an account: https://huggingface.co/spaces/stabilityai/stable-diffusion
https://www.craiyon.com - this is open, with lots of ads and slow generation.
*Recommended* Free, account required, limited images provided with free version
*Pixlr.com 50 images with a regular account, 1000 with an educational account (free for students and teachers with sign up)
*Adobe Express is free for students with education account and includes Firefly generative AI (https://www.adobe.com/express/learn/blog/new-generative-ai-innovations)
*Canva - canva.com browser based design program with great AI tools (some limits) but they have free premium features for teachers and teachers

Good Prompt Engineering
To write a clear prompt to generate the image you really want, include:
SUBJECT: image content subject. [e.g. super hero cat sitting on a table]
BACKGROUND: where is the subject? [ e.g. in a room inside a house]
STYLE: examples: [illustration, photography, painting, digital art, sculpture, collage, Neon Punk, low poly, origami, street art, installation art, ceramic art, isotropic, layered paper, hyper realistic, bokeh, ]
MOOD of the image [e.g., ominous, dangerous, nostalgic, joyful, silly ]
ACTIONS: that the subject is doing [e.g., looking up, playing, or running]
OTHER DETAILS such as lighting, colors, and size/perspective [e.g hyper realistic, soft light," "hard light," "dramatic lighting." "morning," "sunset," or "golden hour."]
